Sometime, you should try reading labels. Most convenience-store pastries (pies, danishes, etc... the pre-wrapped kind) contain lard. Who would think? An apple pie isn't even vegetarian. A lot of potato chips contain whey. You can understand the sour cream and onion, of course, but why is there milk in barbecue chips? You know that gummy candies contain gelatin, but so do Hi Chews and Starburst. Who would think that a fruit candy would be non-vegetarian? If you don't have a reason to pay attention, it makes sense that you wouldn't really think about it.
