What kind of hand to hand combat were U.S. Marines taught in the early 80's?
I've been reading about LINE and how some branches of the service are now going to MMA for their close quarters training. What did the marines teach before that, specifically the early 80's?

From the 50s through the 80s, hand to hand consisted of judo mat training for all Marines in bootcamp. For those who went infantry, most did mat work as well as knife disarming. The extent was informal and usually driven by the Commanding Officer in charge at the time. Bayonet training was a solid hand-to-hand training event in bootcamp and especially infantry. (Yes- that is part of hand-to-hand training.)
Once a Marine/soldier runs out of ammo, the next back was a bayonet on a rifle. It has reach and keeps the bad guy from getting close enough to put a knife into you. If for some reason you lost your rifle with bayonet attached, and you weren't stuck by the other guys bayonet, it was an alley fight to survive to include swinging an entrenching tool or anything else you can get your hands on.
Today, because of Gen Chuck Krulak (prior Commandant), the Corps has gone to MCMAP where training has been extended. This is largely because of the close-in house to house clearing operations where a bayonet on the rifle is pretty much useless versus a K-Bar in the hand. In the days leading up to dumb rules of engagement, Marines and soldiers were taught that to clear a house, a grenade goes in first followed by lead bullets. Now, the military has to be a gentler killer and is required to try and figure where the lead is coming from and sort out the bad guys from the supposedly good guys.
