Thoughts of Darrelle Revis being snubbed out of his second deserved DMVP?

It's sad how a shutdown corner, no matter how dominating, can never win DMVP without the fancy stats like sacks, interceptions or tackles. Seems like going in-depth to judge a player's dominance is too complicated for the voters. Just like the case in 2009, Revis had one of the season ALL TIME for a cornerback and gets snubbed of DMVP because some other players like Suggs had more fancy stats for the voters' eyes. What's even more impressive is that Revis is dominating at such absurd levels in a quarterback dominated league. In 2011, three quarterbacks threw for over 5,000 yards, 7 quarterbacks had atleast 29 touchdowns and 10 quarterbacks had over a 90.0 QB rating.

Also, let's take a look at value. Jets defense would be in the #32-25 without Revis. They have one of the worst pass rushes in the NFL and the only time they get ANY pressure on quarterbacks is when they send 6-7 rushers. Their safeties are notorious for messing up assignments and getting burned by tight ends and slot receivers such as Welker and Gronk.

Darrelle Revis 2011-2012 season

Receptions allowed: 35

Targeted: 85

Completion Percentage: 41.2%

QB/Passer Rating against: 45.6

Update:

He had one horrible game against Stevie Johnson that damaged his ridiculous 3.6 QB rating against, but he still ended up having a unbelievable season.

Update 2:

At Bucky: Like I explained to Jake in a email, I was joking about Sanchez being top 10. I wanted to see how much thumbs down my delusional Sanchez answers get compared to Jake's delusional Stafford ones last year when Stafford wasn't proven yet.

And Revis makes the Jets defense good.

Update 3:

At Wilfork Continent: Clearly you've never watched football (or atleast highlights) of how cornerbacks played before the NFL adapted all these rules to help the offense.

The problem with Revis is he's the kind of player that's totally invisible when he's playing well which is the opposite of what most players are. His whole game is dominating to the point where passes don't even go to him. It's hard to earn awards when your entire game is based on flying below the radar.

It is kind of sad that the voters, who you would think should be in depth, are as simple and shallow as anyone.

Then again I was delusional for picking Eli for MVP for the same reason (going beyond the fancy stats), so not sure if I should agree with you.

Revis wasn't dominant this year. He was very good, not dominant. Suggs was dominant in all aspects of his position and imposed his will on opponents. Revis didn't. Watch the October New England game, Welker walked all over Revis. Welker had 2 catches and 77 yards in the 3 throws that were thrown to him while lined up against Revis. The only one Welker didn't get while Revis was defending him was broken up by Cromartie.

  • I'd have probably given it to Revis as well although I understand the logic behind him not receiving it, Suggs was pretty dominate this year too, forced alot of TOs disrupted QBs and shut down the run at times.

Then again that's coming from a Steeler fan who gets to witness Suggs humiliate the Steeles O-Line twice a year

Great deal for the Bucs. They didn't give up that much considering Revis is arguably the best CB in the NFL when healthy. They also win here because there is no guaranteed money.

It looks like he didn't even get ANY votes...that's surprising to me. He had so much hype at about mid-season, and then something weird happened. My vote probably would have gone to Suggs, but Revis had a pretty big season. Oh well. He's my pick for DPOTY next year.

    He holds on every play.

Holding is Holding. If the rulebook says its a penalty its a penalty. Its 2012 not 1960. He's a great player but you have to admit he holds on every play and he gets all emotional about it when he is asked about it.
