How do I become a better putter?

Right now I average 34-36 putts per round. I'd like to get to around 31-32. Is it possible my putter is too long? I'm 5'11" and use a 35 inch odyssey xg-9.

Is it a classic case of it's the indian not the arrow?

Any tips on long putts ? I get down in two 85% of the time from 20 feet and in. But from 40 feet I only get down 10% of the time. What am I missing on long putts? From that range I feel more comfortable with a wedge, but I know it's bad etiquette to leave divots on the green. Any tips on how to lag from that far?

The average golfers round consists of 45 putts. so your doing good. When I think about lag putts I will choose a spot where I want the ball to come to rest whether it is below the hole or above the hole in any case I will visualize what would be a good place to have my second putt from. I don't think about getting it to the cup I think about having a safe , usually a uphill or flat two footer for par. So pick a spot around the cup two maybe three feet out that will be an easy tap in for you.

Your putter is right for your height, 85% from 20 feet and in is bad stats too. You should be around 95 %. When I go to the practice green I would start out with putting form one end of the green to the other to gain the feel of the speed that day, then I would hit a few putts to the middle to set my gage on how hard a stroke was needed. Finally I would practice putts within 10 feet because short putts count most in scoring. Work on putts within 5 feet holing them if you can make most of those (85%) your putts per round should go down.

    Practice.

Try a 33 inch putter. If that doesn't work, try loostening up your grip. Like Ben Hogan said, Pretend the grip is a bird and you don't wanna squish it, but you don't wanna let it fly away.

I'm newish to golf, but I find that it's the judging of distance/how sloped it is that trips me up. So if you can get used to feeling how much power you should exert for the distance required, you should improve. So practice really!

That's okay. Everyone of us needs improvement. So keep practicing
