Ramble On -- Led Zeppelin. From the Lord of the Rings. Other Zep songs too like Battle of Evermore and Misty Mountain Hop came from Tolkien's works.

Good morning Amy :)
Hmm...
'Rhiannon' ~ Fleetwood mac {SN} http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqEiiVvxyMc&fmt=18
Inspired by a character in the novel "Triad" by Mary Leader, but after writing it similarities were noted to the mythical Welsh goddess in the Mabinogion {collection of stories} http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mabinogion {Stevie said her mother read her fairy stories when she was little, so I wonder if she had heard the tale of Rhiannon as a child...?}
'The Battle of Evermore' ~ Led Zeppelin feat. Sandy Denny

Another of their "Lord of the Rings" inspired tracks - probably the most obviously inspired.
'The Company of Wolves' ~ Caliban

Actually inspired by the film, which Angela Carter scripted from her short story. The sample of the music here is the section taken from music used in the film.
{This week's "Book of the Week" on BBC Radio 4 is about Angela Carter}
BQ: Phil Rickman's "Merrily Watkins" series.
Gail Carriger's "Parasol Protectorate" {"Alexia Tarabotti"} series
BQ2: Well, I often do read that fast *in my head*, but have to slow down to read out-loud ~ my brain goes faster than my mouth, and I end up tripping over the words!

I have to agree with Smiley about "The Snow Goose" - one of the best Prog-Rock 'concept' albums ever, and having heard a radio adaptation of the novel I could really see how the music fits the plot.

Smashing Pumpkins "Soma" is named after the drug Soma in the novel "A Brave New World". The song is so amazing it just brings me to me knees every time I hear it. it also has the best line in any song ever "In another world god sleeps in peace," and those guitar pedal effects are mind blowing/
