Add the two fractions. Find a common denominator if they do not already have one. If the numerator is larger than the denominator, subtract the denominator from the numerator. The resulting number is the numerator so place it over the denominator. Carry the 1 from the fraction if necessary. Now add the whole numbers and add the 1 if the original sum of the fractions was more than 1.
