Can people who disagree still respect each other?

I am honestly really saddened by all this vitriol on both sides or any side or all sides of politics.

The ideal politics is a method for solving problems without resorting to force. Yet honestly, I think of politics as a definite force for corruption.

But all that aside, can you disagree with someone and be respectful?

I am not asking you to agree with me, just respect my right to disagree with you.

Is there any room for civility? Any room for remembering what is to be a united country of people who stood by each other?

Or is all that we have left, the really sad constant arguing and fighting.

We are all people, prick us and we bleed, we all have feelings, we all have good days and bad days.

I really would love to see the day where we can remember all the things we have in common, more than what divides us.

What do you think?

Update:

I have never hated gays, I may not approve of their life choice, but I don't hate them. Your adults, I am not your parents, you don't need my approval. So no, I do not hate gays, I really don't hate anyone to be honest.

The idea that people have to approve the choices you make, or you hate them, really speaks more about you than it does about me.

I myself was born handicapped, jewish, bullied most of my life, depressed most of my life, so don't think your the only one who has suffered or lived with pain.

But I try to rise above by not hating people, just learn and move on.

I just think that it's sad that people have so much vitriol and hatred. I'd rather live in a world where people can be free to disagree, but can still be respectful.

Yes that is why marriage survives for many people.

We can disagree and still respect each other.

    Respect the others opinion.

When you can't respect another differing opinion you haven't matured enough to be in any type of relationship.

    Even a friendship.

well both political parties have done a great job

they successfully divided America like anyone ever done in America History

there are people who are talking about a new civil war

there are people who believe we should exterminate

the poor, the disable people and all the undesirables people

we slowly become worst of the Germany nazii before WWII

    that is totally sick

that is what happen when you fill up your heart with hate

    you just lose your mind

We can disagree with respect as long as we are free to make up our own mind. Every time the government oppresses the free market in anything and forces a decision than we can no longer make up our own choice and respect will be lost.

Definitely, if both have reasoning to their arguments. it all comes down to values, so if someone disagrees with someone but explains why, then there will generally be an element of respect there. Until the arguer becomes bigoted in his opinion, respect will or should remain.

If I can and you can, I'm sure other people can.

Personally I think that it's important to remember that those in politics are trying to win more than just a debate, you can't take anything they imply seriously. from election promises to "we're of different opinions, I hate you"

I think its possible, but I also think that today's society emphasizes selfishness too much for people to learn to respect each other before something happens and we are FORCED to work together.

Americans are like Muslims - when we have it too easy we spend all our energies attacking each other.

Source(s): Which sucks. Thank partisan right wing cable news for most of it - pure bull**** but these idiots sadly believe it.
