Why Sri Lanka became a such a poor team even in ODIs?
Apart from winning the two 2 dead rubbers they played like a minnow since WC & lost 6 consecutive series
But the problem I have is IMO current SL team is better than the one we had 2009 - 2011 !
till the WC Sri LAnka had only 3 or 4 batsmen and others like Chamara Silva , Kapugedara , kandumbi and etc are just walking wickets
But since WC players like Chandimal , Thirimanne came & they are far better. Mathews too improved as a batsman (scored a test century and played really well apart from in SA series)
As a result Sri Lanka doesnt rely on top 3,4 any more unlike in the past . Even Tissara Perera has improved
Actually I think the current batting line up is probably the best SL had since 1996 at least on paper..but for some reason they rarely go pass 250 ..when one fires other fail..its been the same old story for 6 series...but then suddenly they look awesome when all fire at the same time like in last two matches in South Africa.
So what`s the reason for Sri Lanka`s poor run ? Murali`s retirement ?
those who followed SL cricket know Murali played very little part in ODI cricket for last few years..He didnt play most matches even.
Also why batsman are struggling to make brisk starts ? are they too defensive ? or is it something to do with lack of team spirit ?
& I dont think it is due to the salary issue..they know that they`ll recieve that very soon & all of them make 10 times more money from TV adds & IPL..
answers in detail are appreciated ~
@ Quandary - no doubt ...thats what comes to our mind when we look at the team on paper. But even today bowlers made a match out of 230 a score that is way below par.Its batsman who mess up always
Yea SL need a batsman like Warner or Sanath...but Dilshan been doing that till WC.Chandimal is just a new comer & only 21..I think blame should go to Sanga , Mahela Thranga ,Mathews & co

Why do you think Sl is poor is ODI 's too? Just wait and see i am pretty sure they will come back against Sri Lanka.
Yes they were doing poor in Dilshan captaincy , and now its mahela surely there will be improvement. They still have a very good batting line up. And their bowling is not too bad as you and others thinking, they are just one win away from confidence .
Yesterday it was there wining opportunity , they got little careless and did not put that pressure on India when Ashwin and Jadeja batting. They did their job well to get out those 6 wickets.
I hope they go with some spinners when they face Australia. The asian Teams and especially SL' s too the main strength in bowling is their spin attack. They should follow in what they are good at, yesterday they gone with 4 specialist bowlers, there is no need . I am sure they must have learned their lessons.
Hope for the best.I strongly disagree , this is too early to call SL a poor team.

Let's face it, their bowling attack has always been a bit ordinary whenever Murali wasn't playing. Murali had the advantage that batsmen would then take risks off the other forty overs that they wouldn't normally take.
The batting yesterday looked OK, Chandimal looked like a real goer, but they don't look like Sehwags, Warners and Jayasurias do they?
The main problem was the bowling attack, they bowled pretty much the whole game on 'middle bat'!!

No. 1 reason is Politics .
Other than that,
Too much expected from Sangakkara.
Dilshan too unstable, can't put your faith on him as a captain.
Mahela, Mattews bad form with the bad.
Too much pressure on new plays like Chadimal.
Unqulified selection board that don't include a Spinner into the team.
Hasn't spend much of a time in AUS to understand the pitch.

The problem is that the same players have been playing for too long. Strong oppositions like Australia, South Africa, England etc. have figured out how to bowl to the Sri Lankan batsmen. They know what lines and lengths each batsman struggles with and stick to them.
And as for their bowling, well it always lacked venom as far as I'm concerned.

A bit harsh on SL. They arrived here with their first game against India last night. No time for acclimatising themselves, straight off the deep end. Personally, I feel bringing back the tri nations is a step backward.

Take heart from the fact that the world #1 India got two whitewashes within 6 months. Now at least the Lankans aren't that bad.SL will be back, you'll see.It might take time but it will happen.

its just the first match, and SL players didn't have Chance to practice in tricky australian wickets,...
that's why
hope it helped~
