Why did the lady check the other people's mouths I didn't understand that part?

Oh - because the alien "Thing" had spat out the filling that she found in the showers beacuse it can only copy organic material - not metal, so she checked to see if anyone of them didn't have fillings - because that might mean they're the "Thing" - which is kinda flawed because they might of just looked after their teeth well.

The alien could only replicate organic matter, like flesh and bone. It couldn't copy anything metallic, like a tooth filling. That's why she checked their mouths.
