Question about connection from notebook to TV?

Once I connect does it immediately show the computer screen on the tv? Do I have to activate some kind of external thing first from my laptop? I´ve already tried with setting the tv only, and it doesn´t work, so I´m wondering if there is something on my laptop that needs to also be activated? Thank You, Sincerely.

    sometimes there is a function key

    sometimes there is a display setting

    sometimes both

    sometimes automatic.

    now just figure out which ur has.
