Firstly, just to rule out Adobe Flash as the problem, check that you have the most current version of FlashPlayer installed from here- http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
If that isn't the problem, your laptop probably has some manner of web filtering installed that is blocking certain types of sites and media and you would need administrator account access or priveledges to change/turn off the filtering, and you most certainly won't have either of these.
https is actually the most basic of workarounds for bypassing filtering software and what you are doing now is the best way to circumvent the filter (without getting in trouble). https (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is an encrypted connection with a website, all the data between your PC and the https enabled site for the session is encrypted and indecipherable to anyone or anything else that would intercept and/or monitor this data (noone can access what you are specifically downloading , looking at, browsing and uploading. Basically https is a good thing, especially for your situation because the net filter software on your school PC can't filter or block it...LOL...quite frankly, that is to your happy advantage, I use https for nealy all web browsing by default for the security and privacy (I use Firefox with HTTPSAnywhere addon which automatically access the https version of a website if available). I assume you have to use internet explorer and you probably won't be able to change anything or install another browser...and that is just the way it is and you just have to suck it up and manually add the 'S' and bookmark the https vers of common sites such as Google, Youtube, Facebook etc...that's just the way it is, and I really don't see what your problem is with this other than a slight inconvenience of having to manually add an 's'....big deal!

the reason why you have to put "https" instead of normal address probably because you are not allowed to surf youtube using school laptop. Most blocker allow the "s" because it means that it's secured. You're lucky that you still can surf youtube, at my place, we can't even surf all the social sites except for google+.

just clear the downloads folder and delete the skype application, ask for help, and then re-download skype, simple as that.
