Can anybody give me an educated guess to this Jeep/Wrangler 1994 clutch problem?

I need to know whether this is worth fixing. My son came in today and it sounded like brakes do on metal when they're down to the knub......HOWEVER, the brakes are fine.

When he presses the clutch in is when this sound is made. Anybody know what this is and how expensive it may be to repair?

Could well be the clutch throwout bearing . . . . . will require removing the trany, replacing the bearing (probably the clutch while you have it apart - and maybe resurfacing the flywheel). A few hundred bucks from an independent garage - probably $1200 at the dealer.

Worth fixing?: any Jeep - even a rusted-out hulk - has value and people who want it.........sure, it's worth fixing - but they get very expensive to maintain. (I sold my '92 when annual repairs reached $4000 - it had been in the family since new........there wasn't a part on it that hadn't been replaced twice (radiators, alternators, air conditioning compressors, condensers, water pumps, cv joints, bearings, hubs, tie rods, idler arms, ball joints, universal joints, exhaust system every year, tires every 25,000 miles....even the radio.....and it had never been off smooth pavement. But darn, it was fun - and when we put an ad in the paper 5 people showed-up before 7 AM waving cash at us. I want another one !! )

If he is pushing in the clutch and the metal sound come's. Check the clutch cyclinder for the proper fuild level. Top it off and work the clutch several time's. It the sound goes away you may have found the problem of low fuild in the system not letting cutch be fully pulled away fron the flywheel. You keep topping it off in the future til the leak can be fix when you do a clutch joj. But I have a ideal that it is more than a simple leak. That the cluch is ware out and needs to be replaced. As far as cost and if it is wordt it. That would depend on the replacement of the vehicle and the over all shape the vehicle is in. I am sure it would cost more to replace the vehicle than replacing the clutch. It depend or the labor rates is your area. The dealer will cost more than another shop. You will hap to answer the question to replace the vehicle or repair it . If you want your son driving your car or truck.

Could be a bad throw out bearing.

Take it to an independent auto repair shop for an estimate.

Do not go to any of the franchise type auto repair places or any that are attached to a department store.
