How to be positive in a negative environment?

I met the nicest cashier the other day, he was so pleasant I just wanted to be like him. I said you are happy today, he said the way I look at it you have a choice at every moment to be pleasant or not I choose to be pleasant. I want to be like him but the 2 days since I met him have been the darkest of my life. I come home and everybody is so negative and hateful gets me in a bad mood, where do I start? I feel that jumping off a cliff would be an easier solution right now.

The best thing i can tell you is not to let others control you. EMOTIONS are powerful. They affect the way you think and act. Part of becoming a mature, responsible adult, however, is learning to control one’s emotions. Some experts now feel that the ability to manage emotions and to deal with people is more valuable than intelligence. In any event, the Bible places a high value on controlling one’s feelings. For example, Proverbs 25:28 says: “If you cannot control your anger, you are as helpless as a city without walls, open to attack.” (Today’s English Version) What makes it so hard to control one’s feelings?People of all ages and backgrounds struggle with controlling their emotions particularly when everyone around you is so negative. Fortunately, your Creator well understands your feelings. He knows even your “disquieting thoughts.” (Psalm 139:23) In his Word he has set forth some principles that can help One key to controlling your emotions is learning to control your thoughts. Negative thoughts can sap you of the energy you need to take action. (Proverbs 24:10) But how can you learn to think positively and thus be helped to control your emotions? One way is to refuse to dwell on negative things that make you feel depressed or insecure. By following the Bible advice to focus on things that are “serious” and “righteous,” you can replace negative thoughts with positive ones. (Philippians 4:8) Doing this may not be easy, but with effort it can be done. One key to controlling your emotions is learning to control your thoughts. Do not dwell on your weaknesses, allowing them to paralyze you and prevent you from applying yourself to making improvement. Similarly, you can build your confidence by acknowledging your strengths and turning to God for help to cope with your weaknesses. God really can help you, as he did people in the past.—Exodus 4:10. Another way you can help to control your emotions is to set modest, realistic goals and accept your limitations. Also avoid unfairly comparing yourself with others. At Galatians 6:4, the Bible gives good advice when it says: “Let each one prove what his own work is, and then he will have cause for exultation in regard to himself alone, and not in comparison with the other person.”Really it all comes down to controlling your thoughts. At Proverbs 19:11, the Bible says: “The insight of a man certainly slows down his anger, and it is beauty on his part to pass over transgression.” When someone upsets you, try to understand why he or she behaved that way. Was that person deliberately trying to hurt you? Could it be that he or she was acting impulsively or out of ignorance? Making allowances for the mistakes of others reflects God’s own mercy, and it can help slow down your feelings of anger. Then the situation stays positive and you aren't becoming negative

Being around people who make an effort to stay positive can help.

Believe it or not exercise helps to keep you positive also.

Consider, too, your choices of music and entertainment. A study published in The Harvard Mental Health Letter said: “Viewing violence . . . tends to stir angry and aggressive feelings. . . . People watching violent films thought more aggressive thoughts and showed a rise in blood pressure.” So make wise decisions when it comes to what you listen to and watch.—Psalm 1:1-3; 1 Corinthians 15:33.

Ultimately, the best way to learn to control your emotions is to develop a close friendship with your Creator. He invites each of us to speak to him in prayer, to pour out our feelings and emotions. “Do not be anxious over anything,” encouraged the apostle Paul. “Let your petitions be made known to God; and the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your hearts and your mental powers.” Yes, you can develop the inner strength to face any situation in life. The apostle Paul added: “For all things I have the strength by virtue of him who imparts power to me.”—Philippians 4:6, 7, 13.

The child would have had to have been exposed to some sort of positive experience; at least one caring, nurturing adult at some point in development, positive moral or ethical messages, such as are found in great literature and classic stories...they'd have to know goodness exists, and have a deep inner strength of character to hold onto that goodness through the turmoil of his current negative enviornment. Unfortunately, this is a near impossible goal for almost all children suffering in an negative atmosphere, it is much easier to give up and become a part of the negativity than to try to transcend it...they are just children after all.

I think its important to always think of all the positives of something and think that the future will be positive and keep searching for the reasons to be happy. I like to be optimistic but noticed myself that I can be down sometimes. I always feel better when I find the positives and have to convince myself of the positives and reasons to be happy. Smiling and being kind to others even in a negative environment is rewarding. Kindness is always rewarding and brings about good karma so be kind and patient even when things are negative. I noticed it makes people around me feel better when I'm positive and smiling as well as myself

If I could use only one sentence to point you toward lasting happiness it would be this: True happiness can only be found in God, for only He can meet the deepest yearnings of our hearts. Let me explain.

You see, we aren't on this earth by accident. God created us, and He put us here for a reason: to know Him and to enjoy His presence in our lives, both now and throughout eternity. God even created us with an empty place in our hearts—an empty place that He alone can fill. The Bible says, "He has also set eternity in the hearts of men" (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Whenever we try to fill that empty place with anything or anyone other than God, we are bound to fail. No matter how many things we have or how successful we are, that empty place is still there. But when we come to Christ, we discover that God loves us, and He makes us part of His family. More than that, He comes to live within us by His Holy Spirit. Think of it: God wants you to be part of His family forever—beginning now.

By faith turn to God and tell Him that you know you need Him. Then open your heart and life to Christ and ask Him to fill the empty places in your life. Jesus promised, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives" (John 14:27). Turn to Christ today and discover the joy and peace He alone can give.

Where to start? Smile. Have a good song in your heart.

I hope your life gets brighter. The start was you asking how it gets brighter after seeing it in front of you. Many people would not have noticed that cashier. You did. And just think how much darker it would seem if you had not met him.

in this situation, the trick is to find humor in everything. think of one of those bugs bunny cartoons, and live your life in a fun, satirical way.
