Jim Murray and Phyllis Lowe received a total of $50,000 from a deceased relative's estate. They decided to put $10,000 in a trust for their nephew and divide the remainder. Phyllis received 3/4 of the remainder while Jim received 1/4. How much did Jim and Phyllis receive?

Step 1. 50,000 - 10,000 (this is because neither Jim or Phyllis receive $10,000 of the original)
Step 2. Of the $40,000 left, Phyllis receives 3/4 and Jim receives the other 1/4.
40,000 x 3/4 = $30,000 for Phyllis
40,000 x 1/4 = $10,000 for Jim

50,000-10,000= 40,000 remainder they divide
40,000 * (1/4) = 10,000 Amount Jim Received
40,000 - 10,000 = 30,000 Amount Phyllis received
or
40,000 * (3/4) = 30,000 Amount Phyllis received
