Why are plane tickets to Europe so expensive now?

About a year ago, I bought a ticket from the US to Austria for around $800 in September (it was a student priced ticket). Then on the way home I got a ticket from London to the US for about $800 in July (also from a student deal website).

Now, I'm looking at student tickets to Paris or London for June-July this year, but they're almost double what I paid before. Sometimes they look ridiculously cheap, but have "non-US taxes" imposed on them, which cost more than the ticket itself. One ticket looked like it was $470 (ridiculously cheap!), but turned out to be $1200 after taxes.

What's the deal with this? Is there any way I can find a RT ticket in the $800 range again?

Update:

And there's no price difference between the student travel websites (sta, student universe etc) and the regular travel sites! It just seems ridiculous to me that there's no discount for student travelers!

@dash: but I'm looking to travel in June, so I think the weather should improve during summer.

I am traveling to the UK at the end of March from Charleston, S.C.

I booked my tickets with Delta ten days ago and paid $821.59 return, $193 for the fare and $628.59 in taxes for a twelve day trip without any student discount. And I was there at Christmas traveling with American for a surprise bargain $863, of which well over $600 was in taxes. Though I have to admit I dropped in very lucky with that one.

Unfortunately taxes and fees (whether US or not) have to be paid if you want to fly, there's no way around them. The UK government has dramatically increased the tax for flights just recently. And of course you want to travel in the most popular months of the summer tourist season when prices are ALWAYS higher as opposed to traveling in September like last year or March like myself when the season is less popular with tourists.

Try Kayak below, you may find something a little cheaper but be flexible on your dates(weekends arriving/departing tend to be a little more) number of connections and even airports. Even WHEN you book can make a big difference, leave it too late or book too early can cost more, on the other hand you may find a bargain. It's up to you to decide if the price will come down or go up but if you leave it very late the price will almost certainly rise dramatically. For instance my $821.59 for March is now $935 just ten days since booking!.

I would give you some sample fares but since you do not state where you are flying from (which can also make a difference) that is not possible.

Actually NOLA guy, I think it's a personal attempt by the British government to screw me for every penny they can get, and squeeze every last drop out of the rest of the tourists. And I am BRITISH!!.

No, we are no longer attempting to maintain travelers out. we are no longer in charge for the fees US agencies placed on their flight seats. do no longer overlook that area of that value will pay for airport secure practices. you does not opt to be with out that, now could you?

because the money goes to the government and the the people who work at the airport and since European dept crisis is happening, they want more money or maybe the stalks are going up
