Why do Indian people try to impress society?
Some of my elder relatives think too much about what their impression is on society. For example if you don't become a doctor people would think you are dumb, if you marry this person people will think this,etc... I want to know why our culture is like this because I believe we should be liked for who we are, and if anyone doesn't like us, the hell with them. Indian people please explain to me this, if you have experienced it in your own lives. Thanks
I am talking about gaining acceptance through superficial things here. I am NOT angry at anyone, I'm saying we shouldn't care about whether others like us we should pursue what we want to do because it is OUR desire. On My Jock, understand the question before accusing me of anything you *******.
LMAO, On My Jock, how am I tarnishing my parents name? Is everything in this world beneath them, that they would feel ashamed? Explain to me your reasoning.
Don't tell me your some kind of a perfect kid.

I'm only 25% Indian but I know what you mean...One of my best friends from school was Indian and the dude was an overachiever to the extreme....If he got B's he would try to make the teacher change it and he was always calling people stupid....I remember sitting next to him in physics and I was having trouble with the work and instead of offering help he sits there laughing at me calling me dumb and bragging about how smart he was....He made it seem like school and jobs were the most important things life had to offer and he looked down on anyone who wasn't perfect...He became a huge jerk after high school....Which is why I don't talk to him...
I also have an Indian grandfather who left my black grandma and his kids to marry a white woman.....I guess the pressure from family or whatever got to him over time....I haven't met him, and he chooses not to speak to my mom or any of his other half black kids...Which is a shame...
I don't understand why the culture is like this....But things have to change....The people who aren't brainwashed by it, seem to become very unhappy and stressed out.....Live your life the way you want to live it....Stop following the model of what you think a successful person should be...

its not to impress society you moron, our parents come from india where there are over a billion people who have the same lives everyday. they have to live in the same waste sewage dump everyday. they have to deal with the same corrupt government that never cooperates with them EVERYDAY. and they got the opportunity to gtfo out of that country and successfully got a job to support us. they are telling us that it is EASY to make it BIG in the west with hard work. and here you are taking advantage of your parents, and getting mad when they tell you to become a doctor. they want the best for you, because they know that for the stuff they had to go through immigrating, that their child with the same work ethic would be able to go so far.
shat up. quit complaining and tarnishing your parents name you hobo. you sound like a spoiled brat.
They would clearly feel ashamed if they read this question you posted and found out the child they are raising is a grade A pu$$y. quit whining and stfu

I think it's many different cultures who do this. I'm Irish and my mom always is concerned about talking about people when we're out to eat or anything and is always super concerned about her appearance and how other people see her. Some people don't understand that the majority of us are self interested and don't pay as much attention to them as they seem to think. I don't think that anyone should obsess too much about their impression on others, it's too much to focus on.
