Weird spots on my dogs back?

I have a 4 year old english mastiff. Recently I noticed he has 4 or 5 spots on his back, you can tell there not normal just by looking at him cause the fur is falling out and is a different color. When I looked at them they don't seem to hurt him, but the skin is red, scabbed, and flaky. The fur is falling out. We treated it with some athletes foot spray for ringworm but it doesn't seem to help. If it is ringworm wouldn't we be getting it, or my cat get it? None of us have it. So I am thinking it is something else. We have money set aside for the Vet, but my husband and I both got sick recently with kidney stones and it took all our savings as well as the dogs savings. So we are trying to save some money for the vet. What could it be? Is there something we can do to treat it at home?

Update:

As I said we can't afford a vet yet. We have one vet in our area (and no other vets for 100 miles) they have already said they will not take payments. We have no family, we both are only children and our parents are gone. I do have a friend who works for a vet in another state, and they said to treat it as ringworm for now, and told me to use athletes foot spray. The spray is for athletes foot, jock itch, and ringworm. So yes it will work if it is ringworm, that vet said the medicine they use is the same thing just a fancier name and more expensive.

Update 2:

As I said we did have money set aside for medical issues for ourselves and our animals. When we both got so sick it took both of those monies to take care of our medical costs. Selling the computer is not an option as both of our jobs require heavy use of the computer. Without it I wouldn't have a job, and my husband would loose very big clients. We could afford our animals when we got them, and still can afford them, the timing is just off a little bit. But, thanks for the asinine comment.

Your dog's condition has the signature of a mange problem which is caused by some species of mites. There are 3 common types of mange depending on the mite involved: demodectic, sarcoptic, and cheyletiella.

I highly recommend an innexpensive 'spray type' medication (see below) that works very fast and is convenient and easy to use as you do not need to mix anything or wear gloves since it is not toxic to humans and pets but it will kill the mange mites. This product has all natural and harmless ingredients, is very effective and the price is right so it should fit your budget.

When I started using this spray I noticed that my dog's mange spots stopped spreading right away. More scabs formed and started looked 'dryer' than the original ones. Within a week the scabs started to fall off and skin underneath the fallen scabs looked completely normal. The hair started to re-grow soon after the bare skin went back to normal.

    Hope this is helpful.

  • Athlete's foot spray is not going to do anything for your dog. If it is ringworm, your dog needs to see a vet. I'm sure you can find a vet that offer's payment plans or maybe get a loan from family or friends.

If your dog has fleas, please get rid of all the fleas. Biting or scratching at fleas can cause reddened areas and hair loss. Your dog might have a flea bite allergy which has to be treated by a vet.

Why did you ever get a dog if you can't "afford" to provide the necessary care it deserves? Sell your stupid computer and take care of your animal.
