    Well, correct me if I am wrong, but I know for a fact that the whole reason Valentine's Day exists is because St. Valentine would marry people who truly loved each other, and would do so illegally. Valentine's day is either the day they gave him, the day he died or the day he was born, I truly do not know, BUT if you can find out where he was from I am sure that is what culture started celebrating it first.

    EDIT: From the research I just did it seems as if it started in the Christian community in Israel.
