Is Nicki Minaj's Lyrics truly profound and poetic as some claim?
This is a serious question! I am a college graduate, my concentration was literature. I studied and analyzed poetry, novels, memoirs, slam poetry, spoken word performances, as well as other pieces of literature. Overall, I love reading all kinds of writing. Recently, I've had two debates with two different individuals who insist that Nicki Minaj is well according to them, a lyrical beast. They claim her lyrics are profoundly poetic, highly intelligent, and worth some dissecting. Then i read an article in which Nicki Minaj claimed her lyrics were so deep its hard for her as a true artists to get the recognition she deserves because her writing goes above peoples heads. I thought maybe I misjudged her, so i decided to listen to some of her songs....um I was seriously lost. Then I located some of her lyrics and read them...Im still lost. I don't see what she or those other two individuals are talking about!! I found her lyrics to be nothing more than incoherent babble paired with whacky and catchy pop beats. I seriously want to hear other peoples opinions, maybe I'm missing something here????? I have watched shows like Def Poetry Jam and Ive heard people like Lauren Hill, Mos Def, Common, and others perform great pieces of poetry, there writing is very good. Even Musically, you can hear how well they write, in fact some of there songs can be quite easily used as both literary and performance pieces. I would like to hear some opinions on this matter because I seriously don't see any poetic beauty in her lyrics, I don't see any profound social messages or even personal messages displayed in high quality literary techniques. I'm not a huge rap fan but I've some great songs by Nas, Biggie, and Tupac, that are lyrically intriguing. Please give me your opinions and if i'm wrong can someone please explain to me what im missing???

she has no lyrical depth in comparison with rappers such as lupe fiasco(check songs such as bmf, failure, dumb it down and my favourite lupe the killer)you seem smart so if you listen to his lyrics opposed to his beats, youll like him :)but lyrical swag is measured in how well rappers use lyrical devices to relate with or intrigue audiences.so if you can't identify her metaphors word play double entendre's witch- lupe has plenty of-it prob's aint conscious rap.so she might be good but not in a way that is relevant to us all.she might be the next shakespeare but because she aint relevant she aint conscious of todays society.
hope i helped :)

All lyrics usually have some meaning behind them but they're so complex that others perceive it as jibberish, which is really does sound like. I personally do not like Nicki Minaj and wouldn't suggest writing something about her. She may have depth in her lyrics. But not worth writing about. She doesn't make sense to me haha.

Personally, Minaj is one of the few rappers out there currently whose music I enjoy. But, no, I don't see that her lyrics are any deep poetry based on her hit songs I that I've heard on the radio. Unless you count her pronouncing "moguls" as "mo-gos" so it rhymes with "Polos." That's genius. (I'm being sarcastic.)

Yes, she is!
Every single line of her songs makes sense in what goes on.
Try analyzing one of her songs, or any other rap song on rapgenius.com
it REALLY works
