Help with tech specs and Waterproof cameras?
I'm looking for a camera that is waterproof/shockproof/dustproof and I'm trying to find one with decent zoom. Which is turning into quite a challenge. I found the pentax which has 5x optical which is the highest I've found so far. But it also says this: 6.7X Combined zoom: 33.5X Intelligent zoom. I've heard that intelligent zoom works almost as well as optical, without much image degradation. Is that what this means? 33.5X zoom without image destruction? It seems hard to believe.
I'm not a professional so I'm not really up with all the tech specs. I'm mainly interested in landscape scenery, but I want some decent zoom to get good pics of animals which you usually can't get close too. So any recommendations would be great. And I do a lot of travelling to some not so hospitable places, so the shock/dust/water proof is a must.

Even the top end rugged camera for 2012 has max 5X zoom. That kind of zoom definitely is not enough for your needs. You need a good DSLR for shooting pics of animals from afar.
Forget digital zoom in point and shoots. They do nothing but enlarge your pictures digitally -- so you end up with less sharp photos at the end of your adventure.
The best waterproof camera for 2011 was the 4.6X zoom Panasonic TS3. But for this year, the cameras to look for are the 4.6X zoom Panasonic TS4 and the 5X zoom Canon D20.

Forget 33.5X just concentrate on optical zoom. Pentax is a good brand. Waterproof cameras are all the same. They leak if you are not careful in closing the battery door. Make sure the seal fits in right before locking.

If you are not in a hurry, you might want to wait for new models to be released and reviewed. Panasonic has announced the new TS4, and Canon has announced the new D20.
