External Hard Drive Partitioning?
I want to make a partition on my hard drive and format it to FAT32 so I can put some movies in there and play them through the PS3. Can I do this while there are files on the hard drive? (so keep all films, music, program's etc and just partition an empty space and then transfer to it) Or does the partitioning and formatting process erase all data?
Cheers Colin. I figured that was the case, I've got tonnes of stuff on it do can just drag it all onto the desktop and then do it but god knows how long that will take! There's 50 movies, 3 full tv show seasons and 2-3 incomplete, MW3, Skyrim.... It's guna be a long transfer!

there are plenty of programs that will allow you to change the size of your partition and format the free space with any file system you want FAT,FAT16,FAT32 ... without removing the files currently stored on the hard drive, two of which are Partition Magic and Acronis disk director
I find Partition magic easier to use, but there is more chance it will refuse to do the job (it is an older program) Disk director is harder to use but more reliable to do the job first time and correct any filling system problems that may exist, I have no affiliation with either program/company they are just the first two I came across years ago when looking to solve the same problem you are, and there are many more you could use.
you do not say how big the drive is or how much free space you have on it so I can not give an estimate on the time it would take, but am confident it will be quicker than moving the files off, partitioning, formatting and then copying the files back, I recently did this to a 500Gb with less than 200Gb free space in under 1 and a half hours using Acronis
Hope this helps

It erases all data. You should look for a partition manager program. Parted is a good one. These can shrink an existing partition leaving free space to create a new FAT32 partition on. You may still find a problem on the PS3 just having one NTFS partition on the drive.

you have no need to erase data or format hard drive. U only need to use some 3rd party tools like Aomei Partition Assistant, it could easily help you partition hard drive and partition external hard drive. refer to the article:

in this article, it seems that introduce the steps with older version, and right now, it was upgraded to 4.0, you could experience more amazing features.
