Real Emo (Emotive Hardcore) was a form of Punk in the '80s/early '90s. 5 bands of the era were...

    Rites of Spring

    "Deeper Than Inside"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbbdjzWbgGM

    Embrace

    "Dance Of Days"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW3EQu_wR1I

    Sunny Day Real Estate

    "Killed By An Angel"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZS1GW2oivE

    Jawbreaker

    "Kiss the Bottle"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZTvqUvgYCI

    Gray Matter

    "Head"

The bands that are referred to as Emo these days may take some inspiration from Emo, but they aren't pure Emo (like the difference between Grunge and Post-Grunge). They're technically more Post-Hardcore or Pop-Punk.

    Hope this helps.

I think a lot of people mislabel emo music these days. In the above answers, only Alys and Jake! Jake! named actual emo bands. Emo today has been misconstrued to mean whatever the labeler decides. Usually a band is considered emo if the person does not think that the band is "hardcore" enough. This is not the true definition and is turning genre labeling into a practice in taste, which is completely arbitrary. So MCR, Academy Is, Chiodos, and many of the others listed are by definition not emo. Though I would definitely say that Dashboard and Death Cab are among this generations emo grouping.

I'd really like to help you but, the basis of your project is flawed, and here's why:

There's really no such thing as 'Emo bands'. 'Emo' is short for 'Emotive'. Emotive music generally refers to 'emotional hardcore' sounding tunes, but has been stereotyped by a fashion sense, the build up of lyrics relating to teen angst, or dramatic lyrics with adult themes. So technically, any style of rock music could be considered 'emo', if you really break it down.

The other reason the basis of your project is flawed is because the sole intent is simply not clear. If you told us what you are trying to prove or predict, such as your hypothesis, then maybe we could better understand what you are asking.

I will have to agree with a previous poster as say that Jimmy Eat World may be one of the few, but you would have to do definitive research to find out if they've ever stated this themselves. The term has come to have negative connotations, which makes it highly unlikely that many bands put themselves in this category. Ironically enough, a lot of bands do not recognized the term 'emo' as a genre, and therefore when they are asked, "what style of music do you consider youself', they usually don't respond 'emo', maybe more along the lines of ...post-hardcore, metalcore, punk rock, screamo, or experimental. Therefore, you may not find many bands (many legit, influential bands anyway) who have stated 'we are an emo band'.

  • Pretty sure Jimmy Eat World considers themseves emo, hard to think of others...

Source(s): Emo is a term haters use to label music they don't like, the genre itself has pretty much been forgotten
