What happens if you leave high-lift hair color on longer than the box tells you to?

I was just wondering, if it will turn out lighter or darker. and what colors i can use to achieve a light blonde result with naturally dark ash blonde/light ash brown hair. Thank you :) Also, I cannot afford to go to a salon and would prefer to color my own hair for a fraction of the cost and better results.

Everyone has different hair types so the processing time can vary depending on how coarse or fine your hair is as well as its elasticity. In general when dying your hair it stops processing after 30 minutes. Anything over that can cause more damage, be sure to use a great hydrating deep conditioner in your hair afterwords.

You may not get better results doing it yourself - especially when your lightening your hair. I know you say you don't want to go to a salon due to cost but some beauty schools offer color services at reduced prices also they are monitored by the teachers. That may be a good place to go and find out what hair type you have so you can do it yourself later.

As far as box color you get from the drug store - they have preservatives in them so they can have a longer shelf life but it doesn't translate into great hair color you may want to get your color from a beauty supply store and use a 40 volume on your hair.
