I have a Giant Schnauzer who I got sort of by accident. Before that I never would have even known what that was, but he is the best dog I could ever ask for. I'm pretty sure he's in the working class. They can be very intimidating dogs but they are great, loyal pets. They are very intelligent and learn very quickly. I am not a very good dog trainer, but my Giant picked up on tricks very quickly. They can be stubborn and sometimes can be very spiteful. They're beautiful elegant looking dogs in my opinion. However, they do require a lot of exercise otherwise they'll find their own way to get rid of their extra energy.
They're fairly large-- my Giant is at a healthy 100lbs. They have a lot of personality and are a lot of fun to have.
EDIT: I agree with the other person who said Giants-- I would probably never want a Mini or a Standard Schnauzer. I've been around them and in my opinion they just aren't the same.

Border Collies! They are a herding breed. Very intelligent, loyal and a small medium size.
I have known a few people with this breed, and when I worked at a pet store I always heard great stories about them. Finally I have gotten my own about 2 years ago as an 9 week old puppy. Never trained her but when I tell her to sit, she sits (well I might of showed her once). When I call her she comes running fast and slides down on the ground towards my feet. I said "up" to her and patted the top of a large kennel and she hopped right onto it. These dogs are amazingly smart.
They usually come 1rst or place very high in agility contests and some even say they may be the most intelligent species! Best dog I ever owned.
I would advice against getting a hound. I had a Treeing Walker Coonhound. I used her for hunting. They bark and bark and bark and baaaay at anything they see. They have alot of energy and a lot of times they do not listen. They are friendly, but if you want a companion dog, go with a collie instead of a hound. My fiance' has some of sheep dog breed and hes a very good dog too.

Oh gosh I LOVE questions like these!!!
American Pit Bull Terrier - Terrier Group - 17-22 in. at the shoulder - 30-75 lbs
I love this breed with a passion. They're completely misunderstood, but in my eyes they are the most compassionate, loving dog breed in the world! I currently own one and he is the love of my life. I love how smart and eager to learn they are, not to mention extremely affectionate! They can be bed hogs though! ;)
Newfoundland - Working Group - 26-28 in. at the shoulder - 100-150 lbs
Newfies are by far the most gentle dog breed on the planet. They require some grooming but are all around amazing dogs. They too are very smart, and extremely gentle. They're great with kids and other animals and want nothing more than to just be with their person. I will ALWAYS own a Newfie!
Giant Schnauzer - Working Group - 23.5-27.5 in. at the shoulder - 60-100 lbs
Giants are by far one of my all time favorite dog breeds. I would love to show this breed because I love how regal and elegant they look when they're shown. They can be pretty feisty and irritable, but if they're raised well they make great companions. It's ironic though because I would never own a Miniature or Standard Schnauzer..only a Giant :)
Australian Shepherd - Herding Group - 18-23 in. at the shoulder - 45-60 lbs
Aussies are very high strung! They require a lot of exercise to keep up with their high amount of energy, but are really fun dogs! They are extremely smart and very easy to train. My girl is a frisbee dog and in the summer I will be training her in dock dogs, so it'll be fun to see her having a good ol' time in the heat!

It's so broad of a question... I like them all! For differentl reasons. I have worked in the veterinary field for more than 20 years...and just because I love a breed doesn't mean I want to own one...it's lifestyle and preferences may not match up to my own...but I don't love the breed any less. Narrow your own preferences...then look at breeds. A large one may fit the same basic structure needs as a small one (and don't forget the Mutt!). I have an opinion on almost every breed...and how experienced and owner I think that dog needs. Too broad a question for me to answer...

I love Staffordshire Bull Terriers! SO SO Smart. Have the beautiful bully smiles and they are very loyal and "eagar to please" dogs. But be warned they have alot of energy and need daily exercise! I have 2, one is about knee height and 48 pounds the other is slightly tallers and 52 pounds.

Collies! herding. about 66 lbs. 24 in tall. they are gorgeous and calm but can also be playful. They are very smart and intelligent. easy to train. don't require tons of exercise, but at least 15 min. a day is required for any dog.

I like bagels. That's half basset and half beagle. they don't ahve the health problems that bassets do and they are usually smaller. Big floppy ears. Those dogs are all nose too! Love to follow scent trails!
