Dog seems anxious and has dilated pupils?

I am pet sitting a friends dog. I know this dog well and have pet sit her before. The behaviour she is displaying is her regular behaviour.

A little background info; The dog is 2 years old, australian shepherd/blue heeler cross. Walked regularly at off leash parks and spayed.

This is how she behaves; She seems very anxious. She is very excitable and seems to get more excited if you pay any attention to her. When she gets excited she nudges you, wags her tail in a way that appears nervous and her pupils are almost constantly completely dilated when she is in any contact with people. She seems to have a hard time relaxing and constantly returns to you as if for reassurance. She isn't much better with my dogs, two very relaxed pugs. She gets in their faces and harass her, ignoring all of their signals until they finally have to tell her off.

Is this normal? It is especially the dilated pupils that concern me. She appears very stressed and anxious. How can I help her? I don't believe this behaviour is normal as I have a lot of experience around dogs and have never quite encountered this behaviour and been unable to calm the dog. Any advice would be welcome.

This is not normal, but may be the way the dog is.

First, she should see a vet to make sure she's healthy, then exsercise exsercise exsercise!!! Some dogs are very high energy and need a ton of it. She's a hearding breed, so it's quite possible that she isn't getting enough mental and physical stimulation for her level of energy and intellegence.

Call your dog's name (once) and treat him when he looks at you. After awhile, praise most of the time and treat occasionally. Learn here https://tr.im/8mL4l

Start inside, then work your way outside on the leash. Let him sniff around and call his name when he seems focused on something else. Treat and praise if he looks at you, take him inside if he doesn't. Keep doing this ( for weeks/months - real training takes time) and work your way off leash. Eventually your dog will stop what he's doing an focus on you when you want him to.

The problem that most people have with teaching a recall (come) is that they only try to do it when the dog is doing something far more fun than performing the command. You have to teach the dog that coming to you when you call is the very most fun thing he could do. Go outside with a friend and a big bag of treats split between you. Go about 10 feet from eachother, then take turns saying the word "come" once and making a HUGE deal of praising him with each step he takes towards you, then treat and praise even more when he gets there. As he gets better, work your way further apart. When he's mastered that, include other distractions like other dogs or noisy toys. Keep making a HUGE deal of praising him when he does it right, and he will learn a flawless recall.

Maybe she's displaying a tad of seperation anxiety? The dilated pupils are a big sign of anxiety.. Is she getting enough exercise? I too have a 2.5 year old male border collie/aussie and am well aware of how much stimulation these dogs need. Perhaps you could try this remedy called "Dr. Goodpet" Its all natural supplements and there is different recipies for a wide range of problems. I know there is one specifically for stress and anxiety. They sell it at Walmart or any pet store. I used it on my dog when he was a pup doing a long distance trip and it worked wonders for him. Heres a site for more info.

If the current behavior isn't normal for that dog, he may be experiencing anxiety for some reason. Our dog often gets separation anxiety, and the vet said they can have a gravol pill to help calm them.

On the other hand, that breed of dog is highly intelligent and needs constant mental and physical stimulation. It sounds like the dog is always bored to almost the point of madness! Play fetch with him, or get mentally stimulating toys for him. In a pinch, some treats in a taped up box will entertain him for a while.
