Is SSDI for "adult children" different than regular SSDI?

This may seem a silly question, but I can't find much information. I have applied for SSDI for severe OCD, generalized anxiety, agorophobia and major depression and was 20 at the time I filed. Are cases for "adult children" handled differently? Are they more/less likely to be rejected? And do they often receive more/less in benefits than regular cases?

Thanks :)

When someone is getting a benefit as a disabled adult child (DAC) that usually means that they haven't worked and paid social security taxes long enough so that they can receive benefits based upon their own work activity unlike someone who is entitled to SSDI.

The DAC must have become disabled before age 22, be unmarried and be the child of 1) An insured parent who is deceased or 2) A parent who is entitled to Social Security disability benefits (SSDI) or 3) A parent who is entitled to Social Security retirement benefits. The definition of disability is the same for the DAC as it is for a disabled worker - the only difference being that the DAC must have become disabled before age 22. When the disabled or retired worker files a claim for disability or retirement benefits one of the questions they are asked is if they have any children who became disabled before age 22. If the answer is yes the Social Security will take a claim for DAC benefits if the worker's claim is approved.

The benefit amount is determined by how much the parent earned while working. If the parent is alive the maximum benefit can be as much as 50% of what the parent's benefit is. If the parent is deceased, the maximum benefit can be 75% of what the parent's benefit would have been if the parent was still living. It would be less if there is more than one other child or spouse entitled on the same account. Since some parents were high earners and their monthly benefit can exceed $2000 a month up to about $2500 a month, some DACs can receive a pretty high benefit.

Oftentimes DACs work in sheltered workshops and eventually they become insured for SSDI. If that is the case then Social Security will take an application and entitle them to SSDI; if the SSDI is less than what they were getting as a DAC they would also be entitled to the DAC benefit but it would be reduced by the amount they are getting on SSDI. There would be no change in their total monthly benefit but the change reflects the fact that they earned part of the benefit they are now receiving.

And then on top of everything else, some DAC's are also entitled to SSI if the DAC/SSDI benefit is low enough.
