Planted Tank OR Cichlid Tank?
Keeping a Cichlids Aquarium is the Most Advanced stage of Fresh Water Aquariums.
And, maintaining a Planted Aquarium is equally more Challenging. I'm planning to get a new 55 gallon Glass tank and I want to know which one is better of the two set-ups. I know many would say that I've to go with what my mind says or I like the most. But, that's my problem. I like both and my mind says, 'have both'.
So, I've decided to choose the one which wins the highest number of votes, from all the experts out there. I need help from all of you.
Thanks in advance...

Do both! I'd do a well planted tank with some rams or dwarf cichlids.
Go with your gut, you want both, well do both!
If not, planted tanks always are my preference. They are more challenging with the little extra maintenance on the plants, but also are a nicer display.
Cichlids are generally pretty easy fish, and not advanced for the more common species. Some species, like discus call for more advance care, but most are child's play in aquarium care (like convicts are some of the easiest fish to own or breed)

A nice plant tank is way more difficult to maintain. I always wanted one. Cichlid tanks are not the most advanced stage of freshwater aquariums. Cichlids are for rookies. You would have to be pretty dumb to kill one off. All you have to do is feed them and keep the water clean. There are much more difficult fish to keep alive, freshwater puffers, discus, black ghosts and elephant noses, the list goes on and on. Try keeping an African Tigerfish that is as dumb as a bag of hammers and runs into the tank at full speed when scared. He also liked to jump so high out of the tank, he almost hit the ceiling. Thank Jesus for carpet, buddy. He cost $160 and died in 2 months, anyways. That's o.k., I would have eventually had to get a swimming pool for that damned thing.

Tabitha is correct, you do not have to chose. Many cichlids are plant compatible!
Even with cichlids that dig up plants, you can go with some potted plants and floating plants or plants that root ON rocks and driftwood. There is a plant for just about every aquarium setup or stocking that can work.
I agree with your mind "have both"!
Now, the hard part...deciding on which plants and which cichlids ;)

I find my cichlids really like the bamboo plants I put in the tank. Just a few for decoration and to improve the water quality, but they seem to really enjoy swimming through the leaves. Plus they don't get too leafy, so the tank is still neat and easy to watch the fish :)

Cichlids tank. It is a lot more easier to keep than the planted tanks.

You love both Planted & Cichlid tanks, right!!? I've got an idea!! What is the length of your tank? If it is 3ft in length, just divide it into two tanks with a help of a divider. Now you can have both set-ups. Does that look great?!
