"Are Wolves and Dogs the same species?"

Yes or no depending upon the terms of the classification and the preferences of the classifier. There are reasonable grounds for both options.

"Can wolves and dogs reproduce AND produce fertile young?"

Yes, often. However, over the generations the chances of infertile puppies increases. The first generation are often fertile whereas, by the fourth, few will be fertile.

Traditional classification hits snags when confronted with reality. Not everything fits neatly into the human defined framework, or abides by human wishes. While wolves and dogs can often reproduce and give rise to fertile peoples, various varieties of domestic dogs are faced with challenges in this regard. For example, a male miniature poodle would require a step ladder, a safety harness, a great sense of ambitious optimism and an unlikely sense of balance in order to have his way with a female Irish wolfhound.

Dogs are a subspecies of wolf - they're almost the same thing. When people refer to wolves, they talk about grey or common wolves - Canis lupus. The scientific name of a dog is Canis lupus familiaris.

So, they are very closely related, and ranked technically in the same species. They can obviously also hybridise, which is why you see people buying wolf-dogs and the like.

No..Dogs aren't species ; they are subspecies of wolves.

But yes, I know what you mean. They can reproduce, and give birth to fertile young.

Like I said above, they aren't different species.Dogs are Canis lupus familiaris, while wolves are Canis lupus.

Of course, they are, as many other animals are related: coyotes, foxes, jackals. Look at their family: http://species.com/forum/foxes-d

    NO!

    Of course not-that's absurd.

Horses & donkeys aren't either & they can make MULES-the only useful hybrid.
