  • Flooding the Qattara Depression?

A little off the wall I suppose but I've just read that there were plans to flood the Qattara depression in Libya during the 1920's.

Given that it is 130M deep at its deepest and the size of lake Ontario my question is if it were to be flooded would it be enough to offset the expected rise in sea levels in the coming years?

    Thanks in advance

  • Are Wolves and Dogs the same species?

Can wolves and dogs reproduce AND produce fertile young? If they can are they not the same species and not just the same genus?

  • Christians: Is investing in stocks and shares a sin?

Serious questions. I know gambling is a sin but what about investing on the stock market. I mean I put money into my pension fund and invest directly in the markets but here's the thing. I understasnd that share prices can go down as well as up, but I'm obviously hoping that share prices will rise so am I gambling and is it wrong?

  • Atheists: Do any of you believe in ghosts?

Serious question. Whilst I'm a theist my self I don't believe in ghosts or ghouls or demons etc. However I was talking to an atheist friend and she swears blind that she had see a ghost in her house many times.

When I asked her how she could believe in ghosts with her being an atheist she just shrugged and said that "just because science hadn't proved their existance yet doesn't mean that they wont in the future and when they did they would have a perfectly rational explanation that had nothing to do with souls or a God".

Her explanation dosen't seem to contradict her atheism but it just sounded strange.

Are there other atheists that have seen or believe in ghosts?

  • What happens when I listen to some music?

What's happening when I listen to some music and I get shivers up and down my spine? Some times the tingling feeling extends up and down my arm and legs. It's not an unpleasant experience, in fact just the opposite it's really pleasant. It doesn't happen with all tracks, just some but it always the same tracks.

That's not say that I don't enjoy music that doesn't make my spine tingle but some thing else must be happening when it does.

I've spoken to other people about this and some say they get a similar reaction to some music but not the same tracks that I react to. What's happening?

  • How to work out wind loadings?

Can any one tell me how to work out the force the wind would "push" a 1 square meter board if the air was travelling at 1m/s and hitting the board at right angles.

I've searched and searched Google but can't find a explanation in SI units only Imperial.

I'd really appreciate some links if possible too.

    Thanks in advance.

  • What is the significance of the number 40 in the Bible?

I mean Moses was on the mountain for forty days, it rained for forty days and nights, Jesus fasted for forty days, and so on.

Did the ancients use base 40, or is there some other significance, there must be a reason it can't just be coincidence.

  • Does religion change?

I mean do the Jewish people of today believe the same and have the same rituals as Jewish people of a 1000 years ago or 2000 or 3000 years ago? Do Christian people believe the same today and have the same rituals as Christian people of a 1000 years ago and do Muslim people belive the same today as Muslim people a 1000 years ago? etc

If they do change with time which is the "correct" version of Judaism, Christianity, Islam? The new version or one of the older versions? If the newer versions are correct, were the older versions incorrect or were they also correct at the time but not now?

Sorry guys more than one question there.

  • What would happen if there was a complete collapse of society?

I mean if there was no law and order, a complete meltdown of the economic situation, no gas, no electricity, no piped water, no sewage system, no food production.

What would happen to the densely populated areas of the North East or Europe, how many people would die and in what time frame. How many people could survive with the resources available? What would be the biggest killer, disease, famine or marauding gangs killing for a candy bar? I guess the population would stabilise after a while but at what level and after how long? What would society look like after the population stabilised?
