Why do answers in fraction operations always have to be simplified?

I am a teacher and have always wondered why that is a convention for fractions.

    Because it is more concise, and provides a common basis for comparison.

    We could write 48/64 or 51/68 or 96/132 or 111/148. But they are kind of bulky and awkward numbers. And it is hard to see how they compare, or even what they really mean.

    However, if we reduce them to 3/4, it more concise. And, it is easier to see they are the same. And, it is much easier for everybody to form a mental impression of what that actually represents.
