How to clean glass on oil-burning stove ?

I have a Deville oil stove that is not being used but we'd like to clean the glass on it. Windex is ineffective...how can we clean off the soot deposits from the glass ?

Update:

This stove is in a living room so I want to get the glass shiny clean.

You can remove the soot with a wet Brillo or S.O.S. pad. It will remove the soot completely and will not scratch the glass.

Scrub, then wipe with wet paper towels. Repeat until clean.

I have used Brillo and S.O.S. on the glass door of our fireplace for years. Not one scratch yet. But it does remove the soot and the glass looks brand new every time.

    Good luck.

You can use a scrunched up newspaper to remove most of the soot.

If you have any sticky brown deposits which are burned on, try a product called Universal Stone. It's as good as a dedicated stove glass or ceramic hob cleaner but can be used for loads of other surfaces and jobs too.
