Not "just" lack of oxygen to the brain, but that's the basic idea.
When your brain is not getting the oxygen/nutrients it needs to function, it starts releasing a variety of chemicals (DMT among them) in an attempt to keep itself alive. One thing DMT does is allow chemical metabolism in the absence of oxygen for a short time, keeping cells alive -- another thing it does is kick off chemical activity, resulting in cascading hallucinations from the rapid firing of memory neurons, which the subconscious often tries to make into a coherent "story" just like when you're dreaming. That's what people experience, it's not "magic" just chemistry. The experience can be replicated with chemical injections of DMT.
Peace.

apparently it can be explained by the brain flooding with an incredibly potent psychedelic compound called DMT when a person is nearing the moment of death. It's alledgedly what makes us dream too, so that sounds like a plausible explanation to me.

DMT, the most powerful psychedelic known to man is responsible for near death experiences, UFO abductions, and dreaming. DMT is stored in your pineal gland, and when you're in heavy rem sleep and right at times of human death, that's when your brain pumps out heavy doses of DMT.

I live with someone who was pronounced dead and later to survive in a coma for 4 months, his story is pretty chilling. although I still do not believe in a God......
