2002 Honda Civic Smog?
I have an 02 civic ex with a d17a2 engine. After the engine blew i got a new motor, d17a6, forgot to check and it turns out the new motor d17a6 is a hx vtec-e engine. Will it still pass smog? I reside in California.

depends if the old ecu is compatible if the engine is designed for a leaner burn the injectors may be a different size if you also fitted a new ecu ( unlikely as you would then need new keys and security to match the ecu) then there shouldn't be a problem but you can always rechip the original ecu if needed , the main problem might be the valve timing which would make the injection mapping critical

The HX is best Civic engine that year. While not having quite as much HP as a EX engine, the HX engine runs a leaner fuel curve and has a better feel to the engine.

If its properly maintained then yes. vtec-e is a variable valve timing system that is tuned for maximum fuel efficiency
