it depends on the type of fault in the hard drieve
if the circuitary is faulty then the data can be retrieved by fixing the platter to the same type of another hard drive .
if the platter itself spoiled means u cant retrieve data.
if hdd is good , but data is curropted due to the logical dive faults or due to the software (any file) corruption . then it can be retrieved by the third party softwares which can downloaded easily.

You Can do So Much With ERD.. System Restore, Command's Ect
And Copy Any Files you want to a External HDD Or USB Stick.

you'll need to burn a linux live cd, and boot the computer from there, and you also need a spare drive to copy the contents of the damaged drive there.
