Can someone tell me exactly what this quote means?

"The universe is unknowable. If the nature of life is suffering, then happiness is nothing more than freedom from it. Human desires are fleeting and never satisfied; the only way to remain contented is to keep your expectations low."

    Welcome to Buddisim 101.

What it means is as you live, you will have suffering.

The reason for this is because of longing for and attachment to ....things,persons,situations,etc that go unfulfilled.

The Buddist holy man has shed all things and is not bound by the desire for them.

He may appear a begger as he owns almost nothing material.

He has a bowl,to eat simple food and drink water,a robe and maybe a straw mat.

All the space he requires is the space of 1 mat when standing and 2 mats when lying down.

In this way he is not owned by possesions or desire for them.

He is not motivated to act to aquire material goods and is content to focus on intentions, acts, words etc.
