I went to my doctor about irregular periods and pregnancy has been ruled out.?

She checked my bmi and said that it is 19 and I am 5ft 7 so it is on lowest of normal. She has advised me that I could do with putting on a few pounds and should consume more calories from carbohydrates. I was a bit hurt as it seemed like she was implying I don't eat as she was asking do you feel cold. I always make a real effort to keep eating as I burn it off quite quickly so it's difficult.I did have anorexia four years ago so I try to keep my weight up now I am recovered. I look healthy so I don't really no what to do. Any advice would be most helpful, please no horrible comments.

I don't think your doctor is trying to hurt your feelings, but just trying to rule it out as eating problems often cause irregular periods. Have your periods been irregular since you had anorexia? If so, then it might still be because of this even if it was four years ago.

It takes a few years for your periods o get into a regular pattern, so if while you were suffering with anorexia you had only just started your periods, they may have been affected by this and will sort themselves out.

Unfortunately, some people just get irregular periods. You can take contraceptive pills which help to make them more predictable.

You don't have to eat more to gain weight. Start working out. If you don't have hand weights right now, go to your kitchen and grab a set of vegetable tins. Just a 425g one is light but, it will work. Larger, until it feels like you have some weight too it would be better. A jug filled with water will work great.

Just do simple hand / arm exercises. They'll build your arm muscles, your abs ---if you hold them in ( do this by acting like there is a string with the knot in your navel and the needle was poked through your spine and is being pulled), and your legs. Muscle weighs more than fat. So you could gain weight without "gaining weight".

One exercise that I love and do every day when I can is a shoulder combo.

•Stand with your feet hip width apart.

•With hand weights to your sides, lift arms to make a T shape.

    • Now swing (slowly) your arms in front of you, like to a "Superman" flying pose.

    • Lower to your front hips--belly.

Reverse. That is ONE rep. I do this 12 times at a time. It works your shoulders, upper back, upper arms and chest.

There are countless other's you can try. Just look up "dumbbell workouts" on YouTube.

As far as your periods, skipping may be your "normal". I skip all the time. In 2010 I had 5 total periods for the year. I skipped: Jan, Feb, March (June was the last few days and went into the the first few days of July) then, Sept, Oct and Nov.

Last year I had only 6 periods. I skipped: Jan, Feb, Apr, June (July was very light, like panty liner light), Aug and Oct.

I'm NOT on any birth control either.

She's on you about your weight because if you are underweight you may not have a cycle. Young gymnast girls are encouraged to weigh as much as feathers and one of the signs of abuse (often from the pressure of managers, coaches, or parents) is no cycle. Your metabolism is probably a little messed up from the anorexia. That can take years and having a path- carbs included, can help you meet your goals and feel healthier.

Doctors generally know 0 about nutrition. Seriously, most doctors have taken maybe an hour long course in nutrition. The sad fact is, specialized medicine and practice rules out seemingly "unnecessary" studies. This is why they push medicine like statins and tell you to eat carbohydrates. Don't listen to your doctor, they have no idea what they're talking about.

That is actually quite normal really, there are pills that you can take for 3 days, then on the 4th day you will get it. Ask your doctor, that has been happening to me since I was 16. So don't worry. The pill will also get you on track. Good luck, stress can also mess with your normal cycle.
