Dream Interpretation: What is your take on the meaning of these types of dreams?

I'm not a big believer in dreams being "signs" of impending doom or hints about the future in any way. I do believe that dreams are the sub-conscious mind's way of reminding us of unsolved problems or things that weigh heavy on the mind from day to day. So please take that into account when giving your answer.

Frequently, I have dreams about hiding from one or more people who seek to kill me or cause me harm. I am a big man, not afraid of much of anything, except the things that I cannot control. I do have fears of natural disasters and things of the like, but they don't plague me or cause great concern. Usually, in these dreams, I am in an abandoned mill, or an old house, and sometimes I have weapons to fight back with. Mostly, I am unarmed and the threat knows I am hiding and refuses to stop looking for me. I usually wake in a cold sweat, relieved to find it is only a dream, but am personally humiliated by these dreams, and wish I could uncover the root of the problem so it can be addressed in my waking time, so I can have a peaceful night's sleep. Can anyone offer any insight to what this might represent?
