What's the point of homework?
It seems an extravagant waste of time on both the part of the student and of the teacher as it is unnecessary to grade it as well as to do it. Without homework, I end up with an A+ in a class (typically). When homework is thrown in, I may end up with an A-, as I simply do not do it. I fail to see any purpose in the homework as it does not make me understand my assignments any better nor does it serve to reinforce my grades. All it seems to do is to bring my grade down.
Thus I ask why it is mandatory. It seems that there are far more effective and efficient ways of causing students to learn, not limited to selective homework, wherein the students would only do the homework if he/she is in need of the homework to understand the material. If the students, however, do understand the material, it seems counterproductive to everything.

I agree. In high school a lot of homework assignments are there to just keep you busy.
But the truth is homework actually serves 2 purposes.
Homework usually helps you understand the material more and is usually what will be on the test.
I'm not sure what grade you're in, but once you're in college you'll realize how much it can actually help.
Secondly, homework, though detrimental to you, is actually an easy way to get a higher grade for the most part. Some Homeworks are there to give students some life on their grade.
You are a special case, because you DO understand the material without having to do homework. However, you are a unique person as the majority of the student body needs these assignments to do well in class. Thus, schools decide to tackle a bigger problem than a minority. Also, with state schooling, you wont have a lot of time to teach in a class. My school was fortunate to have 1 hour and 30 minutes per class period, but some schools use only 45 minute periods which is hard when you have to take attendance and deal with passing out papers. So homework is a sort of 'at home teacher' if you will.
