I know that this quote is attributed to Mark Twain; however, I cannot find the source wherein he made this statement. Does anybody know whence it comes?
2 AnswersBooks & Authors8 years agoAcquiring online fine arts high school credits?
Many students have difficulty acquiring all the credits that they need to graduate from high school. I myself am one of them, but not for the areas that typically need assistance. Most students struggle getting their foreign language, history, or math requirements. I, on the other hand, need to find some way to acquire two fine arts credits. The difficulty is that my school, a two-year program for juniors and seniors, does not offer any art classes.
I was wondering where I would be able to find an online program that offers art credits that are acceptable for high school students.
1 AnswerPrimary & Secondary Education8 years agoAre there any advanced online Latin courses?
So, I'm at Ball State University right now, and I was placed to take a 300-level Latin course; however, I have multiple classes that only meet once, and such classes conflict with Latin.
However, the placement test could not possibly differentiate between 300-level and 400-level, as it had many fairly obvious mistakes in both spelling and grammar. So my question is this: are there any online versions of AP Vergil or AP Latin (or even college level Latin)?
1 AnswerLanguages9 years agoCould someone explain why I missed these (Latin Grammar from 2002)?
I was reviewing some old NJCL (National Junior Classical League) tests for advanced grammar, so I would like to know if anyone can explain why I missed these. The answer I put is first, and the correct answer is second.
liber mihi (tibi | a te) reddendus est.
maritus pecuniam (uxore | uxorem) non celavit.
mala puella (puerum | puero) nocere volebat.
abhinc quinque (anni | annos) Romam venit.
te (maximus | maximi) aestimo.
sordidi dentes (quodam | cuidam) sunt.
for the sentence: Was Cornelia afraid that she might be killed? verebaturne Cornelia (ut | ne) necaretur.
for the sentence: We need a chief. (duci | duce) nobis opus est.
for the command: Don't do this, Lucius. cave hoc (fac | facias), Luci.
There are a bunch more, but if you could explain these to me, that would be great!
3 AnswersLanguages9 years agoWhat's the point of homework?
It seems an extravagant waste of time on both the part of the student and of the teacher as it is unnecessary to grade it as well as to do it. Without homework, I end up with an A+ in a class (typically). When homework is thrown in, I may end up with an A-, as I simply do not do it. I fail to see any purpose in the homework as it does not make me understand my assignments any better nor does it serve to reinforce my grades. All it seems to do is to bring my grade down.
Thus I ask why it is mandatory. It seems that there are far more effective and efficient ways of causing students to learn, not limited to selective homework, wherein the students would only do the homework if he/she is in need of the homework to understand the material. If the students, however, do understand the material, it seems counterproductive to everything.
1 AnswerHomework Help9 years agoWhy is losing so frustrating?
I hate losing. Whenever I lose a competition that I care about, I get upset. By upset I don't mean start throwing things and stuff--I still treat people with courtesy, but I become obsessed with the object around which the competition was oriented.
For example, after losing a Latin quiz bowl competition that I feel like I should have won, I have become virtually obsessed with memorizing everything about everything concerning Latin. Normally I really don't care about such things, but as soon as it becomes a competition, I take an interest. As soon as I lose, I become obsessed.
Can anyone explain why this happens (the obsession, not losing)?

1 AnswerChemistry10 years agoWhat would a good career path for me be?
I'm only 15, so it's natural that I would think about my future.
For a while, I had it set in my mind that I would become a priest, because it seems as though that is what makes the most sense.
On the other hand, I figured that I should probably have a back-up plan in the event that I do not become a priest. There's a girl who has an awesome personality and seems to be so pretty; she's the only girl that I have ever been very attracted to. I went out with her two different times, and I honestly keep trying to shake her out of my mind. I'm definitely not expecting to marry her or anything, but her sheer presence makes it seem to make sense for me to have a back-up plan. She is also one of my closest friends.
Right now, my classes are, for the most part, designed towards becoming a priest, even though I attend a public school.
I figure I can just put out the classes that I'm gonna take so that it would be easier to give a decent reply.
Sophomore year I'm taking:
AP Statistics
AP U.S. History
Hon Pre-Calculus w/ Discrete
Latin III
Spanish III
Hon English 10
Hon Chemistry
Junior Year:
AP Calculus AB
AP Macro+Micro Econ
AP Literature
AP Chemistry
Spanish IV
Latin IV
Film/Video (arts credit)
Senior:
AP Calculus BC
AP Spanish
AP Composition
Latin V
AP Government
In case you can't tell, my strengths are foreign language and mathematics. If you could suggest suitable careers, that would be great.
I already posted this once, but it really didn't seem like it was in the right section or whatever.
1 AnswerOther - Careers & Employment10 years agoI want to argue with some Protestants?
Haha, I know it sounds really bizarre, but I'm feeling very bored right now and would like to argue with some Protestants in order to brush up on my apologetic skills. I'm Catholic, by the way, so if you would like to do a debate or something like that over religion, that would be great.
5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoProtestants--when you cite scripture...?
What I really don't understand about Protestantism is how you guys are completely sola scriptura and what not.
Furthermore, when you cite scripture, why do you
a) only cite one verse and not look at its surroundings
b) not explain it?
3 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat is the best way to start a Catholic bible study group?
I'm 14 right now, and a freshman in high school. I attend a public high school, however, I want to become a priest. Right now, my parish does not have a bible study group for teens, so I figured that we should start one. I talked to one of our priests about it, but I need to have a better idea of how to run it and what not. I have never been to a bible study group.
I was wondering what books of the Bible would be best to start with, how to run the meetings, etc.
Any help you can offer is very much appreciated!

I need at least five poems about the South African apartheid--I've looked for a while and have only found one poem, which I found right away; that one was "Nothing's Changed" by Tatamkhulu Afrika. Please help, thanks.

6 AnswersMental Health1 decade agoWhere can you get materials to learn Klingon?
I (and my gf) want to learn Klingon, but it is rather difficult to find materials.
It shouldn't really matter how hard it is to learn, because I'm up to the challenge (I'm learning at present Latin, French, and Spanish). I just want to be able to speak it.
