Is taste of the wild really worth the price?
My 1 yr old pit bull have skin issues and they said it may be the grain and starches that regular dog food contains. They recommended Taste of the Wild. How good is it?

First, realize that Taste of the Wild is a low to mid priced food. 30 pounds of dog food ranges from $20 to $90 and Taste of the Wild averages $42.
It's hard to make a recommendation without knowing what you are currently feeding your dog. The skin issues could be from poor nutrition from cheap food, or from common ingredients dogs are intolerant of, like corn, wheat, soy, sorghum, and gluten.
Taste of the Wild will replace traditional carbohydrate sources with non grain carbohydrate sources. So it is worth it if your dog has a known grain allergy. I suspect your problem is probably just from having your dog on a poor quality diet in general, and less with a specific allergy.
I think you would have better luck using a brand that has a higher meat content and lower carb content rather than focusing on just the grains themselves. If you can find it, try Fromm Gold or Native. Fromm is about $40 for 33 pounds, and Native is about $48 for 40 pounds. Both are cheaper than Taste of the Wild per pound. With more expensive foods, you feed less, so you actually save money over time. My 100 pound French Mastiff puppy only eats 4 cups per day of Fromm Gold. Along with a few bones, he maintains his weight well.
With a change in food, make sure to change the treats. If your treats have allergen ingredients in them, changing the food will not help.

That is what I feed my dogs and YES, it's good. It's cheaper than some of the other grain free foods and is a 6 star out of 6 star rated food. When feeding a high quality food, you will be feeding less, and that is also more cost efficient. I have a 65 lb. Doberman b*tch and she is fed a total of about 3 1/2-3 3/4 cups daily, broken into two feedings of course. The only thing is that you don't know that it's grain that's causing the issue, so you'll just to do the trial and error thing. My Dobes issue was NOT her coat, but rather GI issues. (diarrhea/loose stools) Actually, when we switched her to a grain free food, we first fed her Natural Balance. Although the GI issues stopped, I found out that TOTW was a much better food AND cheaper than Natural Balance. So, now she has solid normal poop and her coat shines like glass. (she's red/rust) IMO, this is the best dog food I've ever fed any of my dogs, and I've owned dogs for 46 years. So, try it and see if it helps any, but do the food change gradually, and don't expect immediate results. Give it a couple of months to see if there is an improvement.

If you vet has said it may be a dietary related allergic reaction to the common cheap bulking ingredients used in some commercial dog foods, then I would suggest Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream and salmon fish oil supplement. My Dobermann dog developed flaky skin particularly on his backbone and neck and over the period of a few weeks with Pacific Stream and salmon oil he now has a glossy coat.
In my opinion it is well worth the money for the few but quality ingredients that are less likely to produce an allergic reaction. Wheat, oats, rice, maize are not natural foods for a dog and hard on a digestive system not suited to cope with them - some do tolerate a cheap bulking ingredients better than others.

Why are you afraid of high protein? Dogs are carnivores! High protein doesn't cause any illnesses or diseases, contrary to the myth about kidney disease. With ANY kibble, you should add fresh clean water to the kibble anyway. Orijen is higher quality by far. That means not only are the ingredient's list better, but the ingredients themselves are better. Price evens out because you don't have to feed as much of Orijen as you do TOTW for the same weight. That and less vet bills because feeding healthier makes a healthier dog!

It's a very good food, especially for a dog with skin problems. And it's not at all expensive. Expect to pay at least a dollar per pound for any decent food.

What food is she currently on? Yes food plays a major role in health.. species appropriate food means better absorbed and used and the digestive and immune systems are linked.. when digestion has to work harder it takes away from the immune system. Besides.. grains mean more sugar and sugar means yeast (on the skin) among other health problems.

My 2 dogs are on it and they are doing well. With that said skin issues can be tough my friend feeds a Natural Balance potato and salmon or a potato and bison food

My dogs get TOW, Pacific Stream, Salmon. I really don't care how much it cost, as their health is more important. I pay $38.00 for a 30 pound bag. If your dog has skin issues, your dog needs to be evaluated by a vet first.

Taste of the Wild is very good. My dogs are on it, one of which has allergies, and she does fine. She is also a Pit mix. :)
