The torrent is what collects pieces of a movie or any other piece of data and sends them to your computer. Not all torrents are illegal. If you got to a torrent site like thepiratebay, you will see what they are. BUT be careful because many torrent contain malicious software that can harm your computer.

They are files that allow you to download other files using Bittorrent clients, like BitTorrent, µtorrent, etc. Although they weren't meant to be, they are widely used for illegal downloads. And if someone's gives you a link to such torrents to download movies (which is illegal), then I'm quite sure the answerer would be reported.

a torrent is a network of seeders and leeches that share a file. Most of the data on this site is illegal and i recommend not using it; however torrents are also a great and legal way to share files that do not contain copy right information
