Alphet?? meaning what in English? Someone who doesn't use spellcheck? Taking a wild guess- maybe Alphabet? Greek A is Alpha, B is beta-- so the word for phoenetic symbols as derived from greek letter list sort of shortened form using first 2 characters names gets you : Alpha, Beta shortened to 'Alphabet'. Glyphic symbols are a character representation of concept, object or idea and have a defined meaning when viewed - but may not be pronounced the same by different people- the best current example is the Chinese and Japanese sharing the same glyfs in there written writing. Alaf/Alpha seems to be a simplefied form of the Sumerian/egyption character for Ox- a inverted V with horns and the pronouncment Ax/Af/Alf got used as A for phonetic symbol in greek and other languages. Korean used a phonetic symbol for base sounds in speech to get a simpler written script instead of chinese- a few chines character simplified for use also.

It's an alphabet. That is made up of two greek words, alpha and beta, which are the first two letters of the greek alphabet. Alpha means first, by the way. Alphabets - Greek or otherwise - began when people started writing and needed to communicate with each other about the letters that were being used.

There are a lot of professionally-written books about this that will give you much more reliable information than the inadquate answers you'll get here from people who know nothing about it.

    With an 'A'.

Source(s): Get John Man's excellent book, 'Alpha Beta' - it's the best potted history of alphabetic writing systems and their origin in the Proto-Sinaitic scripts of the Bronze Age.
