    That's an interesting theme that I had never thought of. I guess you could say that Hanks' arrival on the island was equivalent to an initiation, of sorts. He is completely out of his comfort zone, i.e, he is overweight, out of shape, had been dependent on others for the basics and luxuries of life, obsessive about time and schedules, in need of dental work, always in contact with his fellow employees, and had a fiancée-to-be. But...all that changed! With time, trial and error, ingenuity, and determination, he passed through a stressful but educational gauntlet, a rite of passage to become an admired survivor in an isolated, tropical, and somewhat harsh environment.
