Shouldn't we blame the refs?

Gregg Williams preaches using "remember me" hits. Then, he and the players took it to another level by actually trying to hurt players enough to force them off the field and possibly out of the game. The monetary rewards (bounties) for doing so was such an incentive that the players acted outside the rules at times. That's where the refs come in.

It's THEIR responsibility to stop that type of behavior. That didn't happen in the NFC Championship game against the Vikings. Brett Favre was hurt the most, but he wasn't the only Viking injured. The high-low hit (in clear view of at least TWO refs) was an obvious infraction that was NOT called. The interception on that play and Favre's lack of mobility for the rest of the game certainly changed the complexion of the contest. People are going to point to the numerous turnovers (Favre's INTs, notably) by the Vikings as the reason that they lost. They certainly were a factor! However, had the refs called the penalty, the Vikings would have had a First Down at the Saints' 19. The Vikings probably would have come away with at least a FG and the Overtime may have been unnecessary. The Overtime brought us even more questionable officiating (all in the Saints' favor), but that a whole another topic. The bottom line: The Officials allowed the Saints to get away with MUGGING the Vikings.

Update:

Edit: Had the Vikings been given that First Down at the 19, Favre would not have been at QB. He was being tended to on the sidelines. Travaris Jackson could have "managed" the offense for the few plays it took to try a Field Goal. In all likelihood, the 3rd & 15 play never happens. Calling Favre a glory-hound is another cheap-shot.

Sure, the Vikings could have had a first down on the 19, but from about 2008 on Favre became a glory-hound. He would have still been arrogant enough to try to throw the ball and inevitably get picked off again. The reason Minnesota lost wasn't the turnovers or the referees. All he had to do on 3rd and 15 was run. He threw it at the 40 when it got picked by Porter. I reckon he could have gotten to about the 31 or 32, get out of bounds, and give one of the most reliable kickers in the NFL a chance to seal the trip to the Super Bowl. Nope, he decides to throw practically against his body WHILE THE RECEIVER IS FALLING DOWN ANYWAY. Even if he throws it away, ok, it's 58 yards. Longwell still has that range, especially in a dome. Blame Favre. Not the officials.

I agree that the officials should call penalties for late and questionable hits. However, as you have seen yourself, it is the second hit that gets called. The 49ers are famous for that. You will see pushing and shoving after the play is over but, when the other player pushes back, that is when the official throws the flag.

I would like to see some rule along the lines of soccer. A player commits a unnecessary roughness penalty, they get a yellow card. Two yellow cards translates into a red card and that player is thrown out of the game. a coach can use instant replay if the penalty is unjust ( the wrong person got penalized).
