What is the best chiptune maker for beginners?

I'm trying to make a game and I need some NES or GB style music. I'm not very good with coming up with my own tunes, but I can play an instrument and make a couple of my own notes. Anyone know of a simple easy to use chiptune maker?

Well, what you're looking for is a TRACKER. FamiTracker can produce very realistic NES music, but I don't think it is for you as you're looking for easy chiptune maker (FamiTracker is hard for beginners).

Then there is Modplug Tracker (now OpenMPT), which is also nice but still not very easy (though easier than FamiTracker).

ChibiTracker is worth mentioning, but I believe it's only for Unix-like systems (Linux, Mac) - at least I don't know about Windows build. Working with it is very fun though.

There is also Russian ("Russian" as point of origin, software is entirely in English) tracker called SunVox. This is real pearl and you should definitely try it out. The most good thing about it is that it is suited for all kinds of music, not only chiptunes and is really easy to use once you get hang of it.

All programs I've presented here are free of charge and most of them are open source.
