What do you think of this 1960 VW micro bus?
I am looking to buy this micro bus, but want an experienced opinion. I also want to know if its has the original engine. Would $1,500 be a fair price, and if not, how much more or less would you pay? thanks.

That was once a panel van, those are not the original windows, the floor has a lot of cancer, you can see the ground through the drivers side floor and the entire valance is missing below the side doors. I can't see from the photo if it is an original engine but I don't think "fresh air" heat was available until later, the original engine would have been a 1200cc "40 horse". $1500 is the top of its value, it is not anything special like a double side door or a pickup body. There is a lot of work ahead if someone wants to restore that thing, most of the body parts and all of the weather stripping are available.

I think I would talk them down to more like $500.
It is pretty rough, with all the classic rust hole in the floor and rocker panels.
The whole brake system, line, hoses and hydraulics are going to have to go.
You can't trust the kingpins or transaxle either, because this did not just sit for 60 years, but was run into the ground first.
You are going to have to do a lot of torch work, with cutting and brazing.
(Welding is hard to do on thin sheet metal unless you have a wire welder.)
If you are not mechanically inclined and can't do the body work yourself either, I would pass.
If you hired people to do everything, it could easily cost you $6000 or so.
This is only good if you want a hobby.
Then you could to it for $1500 in parts.
Notice how the 1954 in the third link is in much better shape.

I say go for it if you can do the work yourself. I just sold my 1967 Microbus for $750. It had been in my tree for 10 or so years. It did not have any suspension under it, no interior and serious rust holes through the body. I had guys fighting over it at $750. There was no engine or transmission either. We had to physically carry the bus from my back yard to the new owner's trailer......good times
I will miss the old bus!
