Child is usually from age 3 to 12 for movie tickets. While a matinee is from 13 to 59. Then a senior is from 60 years old and up. Matinee is just a fancy name for a morning adult ticket. Adult tickets are cheaper if you go to a morning showing, which is a show that is before 6 o'clock. So since there is a price differences, theaters call the cheaper morning adult ticket, matinee tickets.

Matinees (I know I'm spelling it wrong without the accent) are generally films or performances shown in the afternoon, and are often cheaper than evening showings (especially on weekdays). In addition to special discounts for seniors and children, which are typically given out to in an attempt to also sell to their caregivers in the process, matinees are aimed at attracting an audience at times when most people are at work and business is consequently slower.

Matinee is the time when, historically, attendance is lowest, therefore the theaters offer special prices to get attendance up during those times. It cost the same to show the movie whether the theater is full or empty, so if they get anyone it's more money in their pocket. The term matinee means "afternoon"
