NAS slowing down problem?

I have a network-attached storage connected on our managed switch. It is used to share files on our network. It is working fine, however I need to restart the router and managed switch every morning to have a stable and efficient connection. If I don't restart the router and managed switch, our network is slowing down in the afternoon especially when transferring files to and from our NAS.

Any suggestions that I need to do? Thanks.

Update:

My network is running on a full duplex 1/1000 connection. It is set on my managed switch and on each computer's network card.

    A NAS on a switch should not be using the router at all, unless you are passing NAS traffic to the other side of the router (internet).

    All traffic should be between the switch, NAS and the PC only.

    So restarting the router does not make sense, since it should not even be involved in the traffic.

    I suspect there is still some issue between the switch and the router, deciding what "paths" are to be taken for traffic. I think it may relate to the original setup you mentioned in other posts, where both the switch and router start with 192.168.1.1. The spanning tree algorithm should straighten things out after the switch gets an IP address from the DHCP of the router, but it is just plain not good practice to have two devices start at the same IP. That is probably what is messing up your network.

    I would suggest trying the whole thing with a standard, non-managed switch ( a cheap one from a box store). That is to prove whether it is the mangaged switch or not. That will tell you where the fault lies, the switch or the router, or possibly the NAS itself.

  • Try firmware upgrades on your equipment. Either that or upgrade to gigabit if you're only running 10/100 ethernet, because the eventual slowdown could very well be network saturation.
