this could have happened had patterson gotten the decisions over ellis and quarry in their encounters. but i would worry for patterson here. frazier would just keep on coming all night and would have eventually broken pattersons defence and resolve. it's all over in 9 rounds.

I agree with the two above answers.
When Patterson was champion the first time around he fought Olympic champion Pete Radmacher who was making his professional debut, he won but Radmacher floored him in the process.
Patterson was floored seventeen times, more times than any other heavyweight champion and look what Liston did to him.
Patterson was fast, skilled (Muhammad Ali called him the most skillful boxer he ever fought) and had a lot of heart but I can't see him taking Frazier's punches for long.
Also there is nothing in Patterson's bag of tricks that would trouble Frazier. Frazier fought bigger men, Ali who had faster hands and bigger punchers.
Patterson may win the first two rounds as Frazier was a slow starter, however when Frazier gets going he would start to break Patterson down. He would slowly start to overwhelm Patterson with his constant aggression and probably floor him a few times, before putting him down for the count in around five.
Frazier KO5.

Hello Stone!
Floyd Patterson was a very skilled and fast fighter. Everybody remembers his two first round knopckout losses to Sonny Liston and forget that he did have some great wins too over Oscar Baonavena, two great wins over Ingemar Johansson, Eddie Machen, George Chuvalo, and fought admirably in two losses vs Ali. He also was absolutley robbed vs Jimmy Ellis. Joe Frazier will forever be remembered for his great left hook and being the first man to defeat Ali. He was a supreme pressure fighter and was equally devastating to the head or body. He also had a great heart and strong chin. Patterson unfortunately was known for having a weak chin but to his credit, he usually got to his feet after knockdowns and often won those fights too. This is how I see this fight going:
The fight
Patterson behind his peek-a boo defense lands some good jabs against the steady pressure of Frazier who gets In some good body shots causing Floyd to wince. Patterson is landing some good shots early on as Frazier is mostly missing with his big shots with Floyd boxing well. But everybody knows it's just a matter of time before Joe lands and in round 8 he does land a big left hook sending Floyd down. He gets on his feet but is in no condition to contiune as the referee halts the contest.
Joe Frazier winner by 8th round TKO.

Floyd Patterson would have won this fight, Frazier could not break Patterson's will. Patterson's hands would be to quick for frazier on the inside. Frazier would be eating flurries all night.

I think Frazier would knock him out, but not as easily as others have predicted. Remember Patterson had better boxing skills and speed then Joe and reasonable power in that left himself. Nevertheless Pattersons chin doesn't cut it, Frazier KO9.

Surely you jest! If Johansson can KO Floyd and he was easily put on his butt through his career, there is NO way he'd last more than into a couple of rounds against "Smoking" Joe Frazier. Joe is too fast and WAY too strong for Floyd to even come close.
Source(s): I just can not see a situation where Floyd Patterson comes out on top of this one. Even if you gave him 20 gift points, he'd never hear the final bell. - lestermountLv 79 years ago
If Joe hits Floyd it is lights out.
His speed may keep him out of harm's way, but I think Joe will catch Floyd before the end of the fight, and his chin is not nearly as good as Ali, so he is going to sleep.
