What is the absolute MAXIMUM time a president can spend in office?
My world history class has been debating over the maximum amount of time that a president can serve in office (in years). Obviously, the 22nd amendment states that a president can only serve for 2 terms and they don't have to be consecutive, which is a total of 8 years, but I've also heard that there's some loophole where if a vice president takes over before the president has reached the half-way point of his first term, then that president (formally vp), is allowed to stay in office for a maximum of 10 years. Is this true or false? How does one figure out such a loophole? Where does does it say that (or not say it) in the constitution?

10 years. If the Vice President assumes the presidency after 1/2 of the President 's term he can serve two full terms . If the Vice President serves more than 1/2 of the former President's term he can only be elected for one more term. That was the Difference between LBJ and Gerald Ford. Ford served more than 1/2 of Nixon's term and was therefore limited to running and serving 0ne term.

If necessary the vice President can serve a 1/2 term and then run for 2 terms

The maximum term to be spent depends on the constitution of the concerned country.Mostly,in US two term tenure is allowed but in case of the death or impeachment of the President, the constitution allows the VP to complete the tenure and at the same time the VP is allowed to hold the office for another two terms if elected by the people. In some advancing countries, this is subjected to review that is the reason we see President spending three or four terms or even more.E.g Senegal in Africa.

Amendment 22 - Presidential Term Limits.
1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

WHAT is your problem?
The ten year limit is clearly stated in the 22nd amendment.
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,
and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.
Elected twice - that's EIGHT years. PLUS TWO years of someone else's term
TEN YEARS.
WHY do you people insist on making statements about things you are too frikkin lazy to read?
Really.
WHY?

I think it's two elected terms.
Insomuch as, if the Vice President takes over from the President (due to death or the president being indisposed), he or she can be an interim president for up to two years. This doesn't reduce the time he/she is allowed to officially be the president in an official elected capacity.
This would be extremely rare.

sure, he has. in spite of the undeniable fact that, a miles extra considerable question is the place is he going to get the greenbacks to pay for what he has spent?? the reason there's a economic international disaster is usa has borrowed trillions from something of the international - Europe and Asia. we can not pay it back. Now he is going to could desire to borrow some trillion extra. Do you think of that those lenders are so stupid as to loan us extra now?? Obama's merely answer is going to be to print off the Monopoly funds at a furious %.! which will then deliver us into the worst inflation numbers we've ever considered. which will devalue the dollar. as quickly as the dollar gets so low, will our identifying to purchase and promotion companions refuse to be paid in funds?? Duh, could you're taking a forex that's well worth 30 cents on the dollar on your products?? we don't have the producing applications to interchange those commerce products right here. wager Walmart would be fantastically narrow procuring, huh? Then i think he will scream 'emergency' back and use that scare tactic to take over the agencies or farms that produce what could be exported. extra Socialism. eek! I truthfully think of that all of us could desire to coach for the worst and replenish on non-perishable nutrients products, potable water and water for flushing or washing then weapons to guard it. I merely can not see how we are going to 'get better' once you seem at those info. Watch the movies on the hyperlink - scroll down - listed in the components. Debating that. Really? The answer is one day short of three terms. If a US President is elected and takes office but then dies, the VP who steps in can run for two terms after. Lyndon Baines Johnson would have been close to an example of this but he chose not to run for his second term.

LBJ took over after JFK was assassinated and won the next Presidential Election in 1964.
He could have stood again in 1968 but chose not to.
Therefore, in years, I reckon that 11 years would be the maximum.
EDIT: I've 'thumbed up' everyone, that's why I look loke 'Johnnie No mates'!!!
